Connecting remote communities on the Isles of Scilly to bill consumers and help secure a fragile water supply

South West Water provide reliable, efficient and high quality drinking water and waste water services throughout Cornwall and Devon and in small areas of Dorset and Somerset. Serving a population of 1.7 million across the region, they deliver over 340 million litres of water each day through some 15,000km of water mains to 800,000 homes and 70,000 businesses in the South West.

In 2021 South West Water were granted the licences to provide water and sewerage provision to the majority of households and businesses on the Isles of Scilly, with 60% from groundwater abstractions from 21 wells and boreholes across the islands and the remainder from their desalination plant.

The problem

South West Water required a solution that could securely transmit data to their billing system from one of the most remote communities in the UK.

Our solution

South West Water’s contractors fitted new Diehl meters configured with Sigfox to transmit daily user consumption and leakage alerts.

We deployed Sigfox aerials to main and backup sites with five low-cost repeaters on each inhabited island. With no power available on the island of Bryher, we built a custom solar PV system to power connectivity throughout the year.

PROG software aggregated the information and transmitted the results to South West Water’s Temetra billing system.
