Profiling demand in severely water stressed South Hampshire

Southern Water provides water to 2.5 million customers and wastewater services to more than 4.7 million customers across Sussex, Kent, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

The problem

Southern Water have one of the highest meter penetrations at 88% of customers because they rely heavily on the information to manage demand in the highly water stressed region.

The increasing battery failure of their meters puts pressure on the revenue as crucial information goes dark.

Changes to Southern Water’s abstraction licences on the River Test and River Itchen and predicted future changes, means a shortfall of around 80-85% of the amount needed to supply customers in the south Hampshire area.

Our solution

We worked with Southern Water to install Jellyfish (which has 15 year battery life) with optical sensors to their Arad meters. Passively reading and transmitting hourly information, >99.8% data accuracy over the seasons returned previously unavailable leakage and demand modelling outcomes.

We initially used existing Sigfox coverage of Southampton, Brighton, Andover and Midhurst to connect >90% of 1500 randomly selected homes. Low-cost repeaters were deployed to ‘densify’ coverage where required.

PROG software was then used to decode the information, providing a weekly management summary of leaking properties. T100, Asset and Digital teams were then able tp download the data for various demand modelling and consumer communications activities.

Making sense of the data

Making sense of the data

Delivering insights otherwise hidden in data for rapid, automated responses and improved decision making with PROG.

PROG is built from the ground up with the specific purpose of scaling massive IOT. Its cloud based architecture is orchestrated by Kubernetes to scale horizontally for near zero integration of new sensors, data sources and customers, and vertically with automatic load balancing for unlimited performance.

deviceStatus is a software module that combines a sensors health and purpose in one view. This makes troubleshooting and operations consolidated for one user.
